observations and opinion
Some songs are meant for certain voices and that has to be true of Stephen Bishop’s wistful, heartfelt “Same old Tears on a new Background” when sung by Art Garfunkel. Garfunkel’s wan, breathy instrument seems near to fainting all the way through. But he makes it.
The piece itself is absolutely pure, un- ironic and pained – “No-one but you!!!!” he cries desperately. And he means it. There isn’t a less cool song alive and that is the coolest thing of all.
“To see you again is all that keeps me hanging on.”
