Brexit is Porn

Fans of Brexit would rather stare at nationalist porn, than get back in bed with the one they’re married to.

Today, March 29, 2019 is Brexit Day – the date on which the UK declared it would quit the EU. It may still opt for a “no deal” exit, crashing out this spring in a chaotic mess.

Brexit is in many ways the British word for “MAGA” – a nationalistic bath of smug nostalgia, flavored by racism. Brexiteers love to cite Churchill for inspiration, for their fantasy of Britain “alone.” But they’re wrong to do it.

Britain was never alone. The United Kingdom is itself multiple countries wedded into a union. All of its success was based on working with – sometimes exploiting – others. Churchill knew that better than anyone. That’s how he won the war. With help.

Brexit is not really idealistic or romantic – it is an onanistic fantasy. Brexit is the internet porn of politics, like “Make America Great Again.”

Europe is the romantic ideal here: different people resolved to work and live together, despite differences, in order to be happier and at peace. Does it cost something? Of course – living with someone else always has a cost. It’s just worth the cost.

‪Churchill engaged with the world, he never ran from it. All of his achievements were through alliances. He understood that interdependence was the only way to sustain independence. Churchill would be a “Remainer” today.

Turn off the porn channel, Britain. You’re in a crowded house full of real people, if you just look up.
